Portsmouth Memorial

Portsmouth Naval Memorial

Portsmouth Naval Memorial commemorates 9,667 sailors of the First World War who had no known grave, the majority of deaths having occurred at sea where no permanent memorial could be provided. It is situated on Southsea Common overlooking the promenade.

The Memorial is one of three erected in England after the end of the Great War, the others being at Chatham and Plymouth. At the end of the Second World War, 14,918 additional names were added to the Memorials, honouring sailors who died during that conflict.
